Sub school wants millennial recruits to feel more at home

“At the sub school, many of the students are enlisted sailors who arrive in their late teens and early 20s. Jarrett said many come from backgrounds with strong family support, and when they arrive in Groton, there's a sense ‘of “where's my Navy mom and dad?”’

"’That's where we as a submarine force are struggling a bit,’ said Jarrett, who added that some junior officers have had a hard time adjusting to Navy ways.”

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2014/09/29/navy-seeks-to-adapt-training-for-millennials.html?comp=7000023317828&rank=1

(Uh, some junior officers have a hard time adjusting to Navy ways? Why are mean, nasty SOB mustangs and old petty officers not involved in these junior officers' education?)

Wearing of the uniform

Used to, regulations on awards and accoutrements and how to wear the same stated ribbons would not be worn above the lapel notch. Must be now ribbons and such may be worn all the way to the top of the shoulder.

Reasons NYC votes Democratic

“New York City provides a lot of extra social services. For example, in 2013, 3.2 million New Yorkers were on Medicaid. That’s almost 40 percent of the population, and that number was expected to expand this year thanks to Obamacare. About 91,000 New York City residents receive Section 8 vouchers. Almost 2 million residents receive food stamps. It is often more feasible to be poor in New York than to have the sort of middling income that doesn’t qualify for public assistance or for a $3,000-a-month apartment.”

http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-09-26/how-the-poor-can-afford-to-live-in-new-york

1. The writer uses “a lot” far too many times; i.e., more than zero times. That is a sign of lazy writing and lazier editing.
2. “It is often far more feasible to be poor …” Or: “We are poor and we will stay poor because we get more stuff.” Oh well. As Joshua ben Joseph said, The lazy you will have with you always.
3. I don’t really care. If NYC poor people get better housing than people in other areas, more power to them.

That building material made from trees ... What's it called?

Stuff you can’t make up

Environmental scientists build green lab from sustainable wood. What could go wrong?

How about: Fire! Fire!

“Environmental scientists at the University of Nottingham have made a shocking and expensive discovery: eco-friendly buildings made of ‘sustainable’ wood burn much more easily than eco-unfriendly ones made of stone, concrete, steel or glass.

“They made their surprise discovery over the weekend when their new Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry burned to the ground in what local firemen claimed was the biggest blaze in over a decade.”

Hazardous materials foot chase

The arrest report read “Violation of state hazardous materials law.”

As a newspaper reporter, I figured that could be a good lead story. Used to be, the rule of news placement was “If it bleeds, it leads.” That rule still holds true in some cases, but with simple blood-letting giving way to beheadings and chemical agent attacks, murders have somewhat taken a back seat.

Dumping hazardous materials, though, is a whole ‘nother ball game, and that’s what I thought the arrest report concerned. I asked Janie, the cop shop record clerk, “Did somebody dump hazardous waste somewhere in town?”

“Not that I know of,” Janie said. “Let me see that.” She took the report. She read the report. She laughed. “Naw,” she said, returning the paper. “That’s just (name of arrestee). He got picked up for huffing paint.”

“Really?”

“Yeah,” Janie said. “Read on down and you’ll see the details.”

I did read on down and saw what I should have seen to begin with, had I paid attention to details and not supposition. Details said police received a report of a man with his face impressed in a paint bucket. The RO (responding officer) went to the location and found the arrestee in said position, his face in a paint bucket. RO then took the said man into custody and transported him to the PD. The arrestee was still in city jail.

Well, shucks. There went a lead hazardous materials story. Just another sentence on the police blotter.

The paint huffer did make Page 1 a few months later, but not for sticking his head into a paint bucket.

The neat thing about the last arrest, the newsroom followed the downtown foot chase on the police scanner.

Police were looking for the serial huffer for questioning in another crime. He was spotted downtown and proceeded to lead several officers in a chase that went onto roofs and along sidewalks, from building to building and even at least two times through stores, when the suspect shimmied down drain pipes and burst through back doors, ruffling store clerks and scaring customers, especially when blue-uniformed police followed, running between racks of dresses and dodging displays of purses.

Downtown encompassed only about six blocks, so it wasn’t as though the suspect would get away.

He eventually ran out of breath and was arrested, with the entire day shift of eight police involved.

The chase was fun to listen to, though. Police dispatcher: “Suspect reportedly ran in the back door of Carl’s Hardware,” followed almost immediately by, “Suspect reportedly ran out the front door of Carl’s Hardware.”

Take me out to the ball game

Yesterday at a park I saw a boy walking to a baseball diamond. Over a shoulder the boy carried a long bag, presumably with his baseball equipment – his favorite bat or bats, glove, batting glove and whatever else makes up a boy’s baseball needs these days.

“My first year in Little League,” I said to Priscilla, “the coach had a red and white 1957 Ford convertible, with white leather interior. On out-of-town games those of us not carried by parents piled in the car, and away we went, 80mph and the top down. Not a seat belt even in anybody’s imagination.”

Priscilla said, “And I don’t remember ever reading about a Little League team wiped out from a car crash.”

I don’t either. I do remember speed and wind blowing and the roar of the V-Eight Ford when the coach needed some power for passing or just for speeding up a little more.

Do girls need to be under more controls than boys?

“In the last few weeks, almost 200 students – almost all of them female – at Tottenville High School in Staten Island, New York have been given detention over dress code violations. Many of the young women showed back up to school in crop tops and tank tops, deliberately breaking the code in protest.”

(snip)

“Let’s be honest: rules for boys that prohibit certain kinds of jewelry or hoodies have nothing to do with their sexuality, whereas rules that seek to literally cover women’s bodies absolutely do.”

‘How many young women can a school legally punish for dress code violations?’

Not enough leftover fried chicken? Do you (a) choke your wife?

DELTONA, Fla. -- A 45-year-old man from Volusia County was arrested Monday after he choked his wife during an argument over friend chicken leftovers, deputies said.

Desmond Leon Brownlee, of Deltona, was arrested and charged with domestic battery by strangulation and tampering with a witness.

It started when deputies arrived to a home on Fayetteville Avenue around 3 a.m. Monday. A deputy reported to hear a female voice screaming from inside the residence, stating: "Please, 911, please."

The deputy also reported to hear a male voice coming from inside the same window, stating: "Shhh, what do you want, us both to go to jail?"

The deputy then met Shey Alamo and Brownlee at the front door of the residence.

Alamo stated that she got into a verbal argument with Brownlee over not having enough fried chicken leftovers and the care of her mother.

Alamo stated the argument escalated, and Brownlee started to push her toward their bedroom. Alamo said Brownlee then "shoved" her onto the bed, according to the report.

Alamo also told deputies that Brownlee struck her in the face multiple times and choked her.

Alamo was able to break free from Brownlee to call 911, the report states.

The couple has been married four years, deputies said. Their child was sleeping in her bedroom on the opposite side of the house during the incident, the report states.

On an independent Scotland

From a maybe angry Irishman. But then, with the Irish, how is one supposed to know if they are truly angry, contratulatin’ ya on a fine win at some sport or another, or just downright sotted?

“This coming Thursday the Scots will vote on whether to make Scotland an independent nation. And I hope they do because it will be a disaster.

“I don’t say this as a prejudiced Irishman. Even though the thistle-arse sheep-shagger Scots swiped Ulster and sent a herd of Presbyterian proddy dogs and porridge wogs to squat on our land and won the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 by using unfair—indeed, unheard of —- organization, discipline, and tactics on an Irish battlefield. We Micks only hold a grudge about such things for 300 years or so.

“Nor is Scottish independence a misery-loves-company moment for us Irish. True, Irish independence has been no bed of shamrocks, what with the Easter Rebellion, the black-and-tans, the civil war, the IRA, and the Celtic Tiger turning out to be a mangy barn cat drowned in the well.”

“(By the way, NPR newscasters will have to learn to pronounce ‘Scotland’ the way the Scottish do. When asked how to pronounce the name of their country the Scottish say, ‘Faauhk you.’)”

Cold-hearted, hard-headed strategy

“But just as the attack on Pearl Harbor alerted a recalcitrant nation, however far current leadership has drifted away the country should be reminded that 9/11 was proof that ‘the splendid isolation’ of the U.S. from the rest of the world’s troubles during the 19th century is long past history.”

It’s the “make them act a certain way they choose for them” part.

“them,” “they” and “them.”

How in the world of Ben Johnson can “they” make “them” act as “they” choose “them” to act? “Them” and “they” are the same, grammatically speaking.

'Coroner Pissed There’s No Box For "Trampled By Elephants In Maine" On The Form'

“HOPE — A former veterinarian who turned a small farm in midcoast Maine into a sanctuary for two retired circus elephants was killed Tuesday morning when one of the animals apparently stepped on him after he fell in their enclosure. James Laurita, co-founder of Hope Elephants, was found dead inside a corral shortly after he went in to feed the two elephants, Rosie and Opal, around 7 a.m. Knox County Chief Deputy Sheriff Tim Carroll believes Laurita fell into the corral and hit his head on concrete. An autopsy conducted later Tuesday by the state medical examiner concluded that Laurita, 56, died from asphyxiation and multiple fractures resulting from compression of the chest, presumably because one of the giant mammals stepped on him. It was not immediately clear Tuesday what would become of the Hope Elephants organization or the animals themselves in the wake of Laurita’s death. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been called in to investigate, police said. A man who was keeping media away from the facility Tuesday said there is another elephant handler on staff and that an emergency plan is in place to take care of the elephants. The sheriff’s department is still investigating, but has ruled Laurita’s death an accident – one that rocked this rural town in the Camden Hills area of Knox County. Open range? Not so fast there, Pilgrim

A few miles from my daughter’s house in Florida, there are tens of thousands of acres of grassland butting against unseen thousands of acres of woodland.

Where are the cattle?

That might be a Texan thing, but open grassland calls for cattle. Cattle to keep the grass down, cattle to keep the land fertilized.

As a guess, cattle do not pay as much as do people. Houses and highways bring a better return. The cost of bulldozers and nail guns are easier offset than is the cost of feed and veterinarians.

My wife and I yesterday did our part in lessening the amount of cattle land. We bought a house a few miles from Parrish, Florida.

Outwardly, we have become less Texan, I suppose.

I will miss that part of us.

The perfect house

Except all bedrooms are on the second floor.

Around 25 years old, with grounds – not a yard, grounds. Flat area, many palm trees, a large pond in front. Five acres.

The Manatee River is four feet from the back deck.

Such a house, such a house.

Perfect. Except … the number of zeroes after the two fives. Four zeroes. As in $550,000.

And all bedrooms are on the second floor. Not good for homeowners who are 68 and 62.

Leave if you don’t want to take the full oath

“An atheist airman at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada was denied re-enlistment last month for refusing to take an oath containing ‘so help me God,’ the American Humanist Association said Thursday.

“And in a Sept. 2 letter to the inspectors general for the Air Force and Creech, Monica Miller, an attorney with the AHA’s Apignani Humanist Legal Center, said the airman should be allowed to re-enlist without having to swear to a deity, and instead given a secular oath. Miller said the AHA is prepared to sue if the airman is not allowed to re-enlist.

“According to the AHA, the unnamed airman was told Aug. 25 that the Air Force would not accept his contract because he had crossed out the phrase ‘so help me God.’ The airman was told his only options were to sign the religious oath section of the contract without adjustment and recite an oath concluding with ‘so help me God,’ or leave the Air Force, the AHA said.[...]

“’Reciting “So help me God” in the re-enlistment and commissioning oaths is a statutory requirement under Title 10 USC 502,’ Air Force spokeswoman Rose Richeson said Thursday. AFI 36-2606 ‘is consistent with the language mandated in 10 USC 502. Paragraph 5.6 (and) was changed in October 2013 to reflect the aforementioned statutory requirement and airmen are no longer authorized to omit the words “So help me God.”’“

http://weaselzippers.us/198797-refusal-to-say-so-help-me-god-sidelines-airmans-reenlistment/

(There is no such thing as the right to re-enlist.)

The debate is over!

“Thanks to the excellent CGP Grey, I have learned that the notion that the Romans had rooms called vomitoria, where they could vomit out their meals so they could go back to eat more, is a myth. Some Romans apparently did engage in this practice, but there was no separate room devoted to it. Aldous Huxley, it seems, is generally credited — or debited? — with providing the first echo of this myth in a prominent English book, though the term must have been in the air for Huxley to have used it.

“A vomitorium was, rather (in the words of the Oxford English Dictionary), a ‘passage or opening in an ancient amphitheatre or theatre, leading to or from the seats’ (see, e.g., this reference http://books.google.com/books?id=ZPoKAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA357&dq=vomitorium+%7C+vomitoria&hl=en&sa=X&ei=eWcDVIuMKoK_igKj0IGQDg&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=vomitorium%20%7C%20vomitoria&f=false

). This dysphemism presumably stemmed from the analogy between people spewing forth through the openings and, well, …. Learn something new every day.”

House hunting in Florida

People here like their property. Do they ever. They want some big dollars, maybe the size of dollars back when you could go down to the bank and turn in that piece of green paper for its equivalent in silver, and before FDR took control of banks and such, you could get the equivalent in gold.

Big dollars.

For example, my wife and I looked at a parcel a few blocks from Kathleen’s house, 3.25 acres of tall grass and half a dozen oak trees with Spanish moss. $149,900. That’s $46,123 an acre.

There are three other lots in the same neighborhood, two 2-acre lots and one 3.14-acre plat, with the same dollar-per-acre price.

Anybody who buys the land has to clear grass and some trees and then bring in a bunch of truckloads of fill to raise the house location above the flood area. So, there is a better than $200,000 outlay before even laying out lines for a house.

And … parts of three lots are designated for wetlands preservation. No building or disturbing the water and weeds.

The area is quite nice, but we’ll have to look elsewhere

They must be English

THESE ARE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED BY "THOMAS COOK VACATIONS" FROM DISSATISFIED CUSTOMERS:

1. "I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts."

2. "It's lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during 'siesta' time -- this should be banned."

3. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don't like spicy food."

4. "We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price."

5. "The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room."

6. "We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow."

7. "They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax."

8. "No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared."

9. "Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers."

10. "We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish."

11. "The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun."

12. "It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair."

13. "I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends' three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller."

14. "The brochure stated: 'No hairdressers at the resort.' We're trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service."

15. "When we were in Spain, there were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners."

16. "We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning."

17. "It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel."

18. "I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes."

19. "My fiancee and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.”

ISIS can take credit for arrangement of enemies

“In fact, ISIS has led to an almost unbelievable broad coalition against it, all of whom seek to destroy it. Here is a short, clockwise list: Russia, Turkey, Iran, the Kurdish militias (Pêşmerge), the Gulf states, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Syrian army, the Lebanese army, Hezbollah and Israel.

“It can take credit for another almost unbelievable achievement: It managed to return the US Army to Iraq under the Obama administration. Apart from the aerial strikes that are already taking place, US Secretary of State John Kerry is also working on building a wide international coalition to eradicate the organization.” – Amos Yadlin, former director IDF military intelligence.

You can't hide your flying eyes

A Tampa, Fla., TV station news reporter should stick to talking and not give too much time to her writing.

The reporter on Wednesday wrote on the station’s web page of a restaurant owner’s complaints that pier construction near his eatery kept customers away.

Also, the reporter wrote, the restaurant owner said the pier work was “an eye soar.”

With that kind of word knowledge, why did the reporter not take another step and write about the “peer?”

Not so fast there, prejudiced person. In California:

AB 1951 would “modify birth certificates by removing the lines ‘mother’ and ‘father’ and replace them with checked boxes that read ‘mother and father’ and ‘parent,’ offering a generic, gender-neutral option. If ‘mother’ and ‘father’ are no longer accurate descriptions on a birth certificate, what will the children call these parents?”

AB 1577 would “requires public health officers, when preparing official death certificates for transgender decedents, to ignore the biological gender at birth and prepare the death certificate as the decedent has self-identified.”

SB 1306 “removes all references to ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ in the Family Code, replacing with the gender-neutral phrase ‘spouse,’ as well as removal of ‘male,’ ‘female’ and ‘opposite sex.’”

Hang the bastards!

From lamp posts!

"A moral response to this behavior might involve those officials, among others, hanging from lampposts. The legal system is, ultimately, an ancient bargain: Renounce your mob violence and blood feuds and we will provide you with justice. It could be argued that such a default as this calls the whole bargain into question, and justifies self-help along ancient lines."

For California "sheepherders, however, effective July 1, 2002, the minimum wage was set at $1,200.00 per month. On January 1, 2007, this wage increased to a minimum monthly salary of $1,333.20, and on January 1, 2008, it increased again to a minimum monthly salary of $1,422.52. Effective July 1, 2014, the minimum monthly salary for sheepherders will be $1600.34. Effective January 1, 2016, the minimum monthly salary for sheepherders will be $1777.98. Wages paid to sheepherders may not be offset by meals or lodging provided by the employer.
