Marcus, Iowa, Zip 51035

A lot of settlement occurred in Iowa after the frontier moved much farther west.

Marcus, begun in 1872, is in Cherokee County, one county over from the Missouri River and three counties south of Minnesota. (I am not sure Cherokee were as far north as Iowa. Wikipedia lists Miami, Sauk, Wea, Kickapoo, Lenni Lenape, Mascouten, Meskwaki, Arikara, Pawnee, Hidasta, Mandan, Kaw, Omaha, Osage, Ponca, Santee Sioux, Yantee Sioux, Ho-Chunk, Ioway, Missouria, and Otes as area natives. I doubt that many tribes lived peacefully.)

In the 2010 census, 1,117 people lived in Marcus. Population has been declining since 1970, when the population was 1,272.

Here is a satellite picture:

Marcus looks like a typical Plains town – some trees and houses surrounded by fields. In each square or rectangle formed by roads, is an area with a farm house, barn, vehicle shed and grain storage. This view could be the prime example of Iowa farming. Everything is well organized.

Here is the schedule for this year's fair, Aug. 6-9:

To show a difference between Iowa and California, the Marcus Fair has mud volleyball.

The man/woman split is 51%/49%. Household income is about $6,000 above Iowa median. House value is $40,000 lower than state median. Ancestries: German (45.9%), Irish (12.3%), Norwegian (5.8%), Swedish (5.5%), Dutch (5.4%), English (4.8%).
