An internet poster attributed to Albert Hoffman:
“God only speaks to those who understand the language.”
First, the grammar. As written, the sentence says God does nothing but speak to those who understand the language. That is, “God only speaks.” The sentence implies that God communicates in other ways to those who do not understand the language.
Second, an explanation left hanging. Hoffman does not define “the language.” A reader, then, may apply his or her own definition.
Third, Hoffman “was a Swiss scientist known best for being the first person to synthesize, ingest, and learn of the psychedelic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Hofmann was also the first person to isolate, synthesize, and name the principal psychedelic mushroom compounds psilocybin and psilocin. He authored more than 100 scientific articles and numerous books, including LSD: Mein Sorgenkind (LSD: My Problem Child). In 2007, he shared first place with Tim Berners-Lee in a list of the 100 greatest living geniuses, published by The Telegraph newspaper.”

Hoffman, who had all the answers, must have been quite disappointed to only tie for first place.
(If Hoffman had written the above sentence, he would have said, “only to tie for first place.” See the difference?)
