Was a time rural carriers (mail men) did more than put mail in boxes. If you needed to mail a letter but didn’t have a 5-cent stamp, you would fix a nickel onto the envelope with a clothes pin and put it in the box and raise the flag. The mail man would take the nickel, lick the stamp and put it on the envelope and then put the clothes pin back in the box. When stamps were 3 cents, the mailman would leave two pennies change in the clothes pin.
