With a 2010 population of 1,480, Milam has the biggest population beyond any other in Sabine County.
But Milam is not the county seat. That designation is held by Hemphill, with a population of 1,198. In fact, Milam is not an organized town, but a census designated place.
Milam was the designated “municipal seat” of Sabine County from 1836 until 1858, when county residents decided they “wanted a more central location for the county seat.” (Wikipedia.) Sabine County’s 2010 population was 10,834.
Numbers collected for the 2000 census show Milam’s population was 90.9 percent white and 7.07 percent black. “About 6.4% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.1% of those under age 18 and 11.9% of those age 65 or over.” (Wikipedia.)
Milam is on the southwestern edge of Sabine National Forest. Toledo Bend Reservoir is to the east and northeast. The lake encompasses 185,000 acres, making it the largest man-made body of water in Louisiana, the largest in the South and fifth-largest in the United States.
Good fishing, from what I’ve been told.
