A few miles from my daughter’s house in Florida, there are tens of thousands of acres of grassland butting against unseen thousands of acres of woodland.
Where are the cattle?
That might be a Texan thing, but open grassland calls for cattle. Cattle to keep the grass down, cattle to keep the land fertilized.
As a guess, cattle do not pay as much as do people. Houses and highways bring a better return. The cost of bulldozers and nail guns are easier offset than is the cost of feed and veterinarians.
My wife and I yesterday did our part in lessening the amount of cattle land. We bought a house a few miles from Parrish, Florida.
Outwardly, we have become less Texan, I suppose.
I will miss that part of us.
