Let’s get personal

Today is my birthday. Number 70. Yep. Seven-zero. So, some meaningful birthdays:

No. 18 – graduated from Paul H. Pewitt High School in May; enlisted in the Army in September.

No. 19 – in infantry AIT at Fort Polk, La. On a troopship in March, 28 days crossing the Pacific Ocean; stopped at Pearl Harbor, Guam, Yokohama, Okinawa and Inchon. Assigned to 1st Cavalry Division.

No. 20 – With 2nd Infantry Division, Republic of Korea. Reported to Air Cav Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry at Fort Meade, Md., in April; assigned to Aero Rifle Platoon; arrived in Republic of Vietnam on Dec. 2, 1966.

No. 21 – At Blackhorse Base Camp, about 10 miles south of Xuan Loc, Republic of Vietnam.

No. 26 – married Priscilla Rodgers in Texarkana, Texas.

No. 30 – had first child, Michael.

No. 33 – daughter Kathleen born.

No. 34 – second son Casey born.

No. 35 – started work as Training NCO with Co. B, 3d Bn (Mech) 144th Infantry, Texas Army National Guard, in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

No. 40 – vein burst in my brain; had surgery; emotional and physical problems followed.

No. 44 – medically retired from Army.

No. 63 – moved to Central Arkansas, where Priscilla had job that paid more than three times my top salary as a soldier.

No. 68 – moved to Florida.

?? – returned to Texas and became part of the soil.

  1. Well, Bob, it has been my privilege to know you for most of those 70 years (I reach that milestone next month). We have had good lives, but I ain't ready to hear them blow taps for either of us yet. Wishing you a Very Happy Birthday, and wishing you and Pricilla the very best for many years to come! Larry
