Otis is in Rapides Parish and is surrounded by woods. Surrounded.

See? Surrounded by woods. Louisiana Highway 121 makes a line through the woods, but other than that highway and a few dirt roads and drives, not much else. Alexandria is a few miles to the northeast.

Rapids Parish is pretty much in the center of the state. For people who are not from around there, Wikipedia helpfully informs that Rapides is the French spelling of “rapids” and is pronounced “Ra-peeds.”
Wikipedia also notes Rapides’ 2010 population was 131,613. Of those, 66.51% are white; 30.43% Black or African American; 0.74% Native American; 0.86% Asian; 0.04% Pacific Islander; 0.42% from other races; and 1.01% from two or more races. 1.38% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. The parish had its largest population in 1980 – 135,282.
