In 2000, 13% of families and 20% of the overall population was below the official Federal poverty line. The town had its largest population in 1940, when 204 people lived there.
“In the early days, the village had about 40 buildings and 125 inhabitants. The railroad made it a number-one market for grain, produce, and livestock. At first there were both passenger and freight trains. About the turn of the century the line, running from O'Neill to Sioux City, was acquired by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad. Passenger service was discontinued in 1942, but
especially long ‘corn trains’ in season.”

As of 2000, the population of Dixon County was 6,000. Ponca is the county seat. The Missouri River separates Dixon County from South Dakota. The county’s highest population was 11,815, in 1920.
