On 25 October, 1854, the 4th and 13th Light Dragoons, the 17th Lancers and the 8th and 11th Hussars charged Russian guns at Balaklava. Of the approximately 670 men who rode toward the guns, 120 were killed, at least 160 were wounded and 50 were taken prisoner.
Also killed were 375 horses. As in all wars in which horses charged or pulled or transported, the animals did only what their humans asked. Like their riders and drivers, they did not ask why.
