Cunningham, Texas

Cunningham is in southeastern Lamar County and north of the Sulphur River. The population is around 100.

Wikipedia has this to say: “Cunningham is an unincorporated community in Lamar CountyTexasUnited States.
“The Prairiland Independent School District serves area students.”

Not much. Here’s a bit more about the community:

History in a Pecan Shell
Named for early settler and landowner Sam Cunningham, who was responsible for luring other citizens, the first event worth mentioning was the establishment of a post office in 1912.

The first population figures are from 1915 when 350 people called Cunningham home. The town had its own doctor, three general stores as well as a saw mill and a newspaper. The community had two churches at that time.

The Great Depression hit the town hard and by the 1940s it had decreased to just 200. Cunningham had added an additional church by the 1980s, even as the businesses and population declined. The community showed 110 people for the 1990 census – and remained the same for the 2000 count.
That site has several photographs of buildings in Cunningham.

The land is mostly farmland and grazing land. There are some wooded areas and quite a few pecan trees.

In Northeast Texas counties, you can often drive a mile outside town and see nothing but land and woods and an occasional house for a long time.
