Not long ago, Azerbaijan accused Iran of “exporting religious fundamentalism,” while Iran’s government countered with charges the Azeris made the area a “playground for Israeli operations.”
Although both accusations had some degree of fact, changing political winds now fill the sails of Baku-Tehran co-operation.
“’Threats coming from ISIS and al Qaeda have been discussed [by Azerbaijani and Iranian officials]. It was decided to make joint efforts to tackle religious fundamentalism,’ APA reported (Iranian ambassador) Pak Ayeen as saying.”
