In 1843, a Red River County Texas man filed suit in district court, accusing a riverboat captain of failure to properly secure several hundreds of dollars in shipped goods.
The list of damaged cargo began with these three items:
Candles.
Soap.
Whiskey.
When you consider the distance from markets and areas of production, those three items deemed of most importance make sense.
