Written history; selective history; WTF happened?

A bunch of things happen. A big thing happens. Years later, historians look at the things that happened, pick out some that might be, maybe are, can be sort of related and say, “This is why the Big Thing happened. It was inevitable.” Or, “If so and so had done such and such at this point, the Big Thing might not have happened.”
