My wife and I are going to
another couple’s house tonight for Halloween. Five or so other married couples
also will be there, all of us armed with suitable amounts of candy and such for
tots, toddlers and teens.
The Halloween gathering has
become an annual event for us retired folks. Our places of origin range from
Texas to Massachusetts, with Missourians and even a Brooklynite and a New Jerseyian
thrown in for balance.
I don’t know if our friends’
across-the-street harasser will make an appearance. The harasser oftentimes
yells obscenities at our friends. Bad words. Misdemeanor words, except local
law says as long as he remains on his own property, nothing can be done.
Huh. So he can call our
friends (CENSORED) and (CENSORED) and even (CENSORED), but he has broken no
law?
I mentioned to our friend, “If
we were back in Texas, this would have been taken care of at the beginning.” I
said, “And if this was your Massachusetts neighborhood, I know you knew a guy
who would have set the man straight.”
My friend agreed. But, we’re
in Florida, and the same rules don’t apply.
Happy Halloween.
