City Council in
Charlottesville, Va., in 2017 voted to take down a statue of U.S. Army Col. and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. A Virginia
circuit judge has ruled the statue is a
war memorial and protected by state law.
Judge Richard Moor said the
city has “confused or conflated 1) what the statues
are with 2) the intentions or motivations of some involved in erecting them, or
the impact that they might have on some people and how they might make some
people feel. But that does not change what they are."
Or, a thing is
not illegal just because it makes you feel bad.
