“It was 190 years ago (plus one day), on Dec. 2, 1832, that Sam Houston crossed the Red River out of the Indian Territory into Texas for the first time. He had no inkling of what the next 31 years would bring to his life but, like so many before and since, he was coming to Texas for a second chance. Think about that fateful crossing and all that came out of it as you lay down all a-snuggle in your beds in Houston and Dallas and Sparks and Palestine and Lovelady tonight. Had he not made that crossing, those towns --- and this page ---- would not exist. History combs the thinnest of hairs.
“God bless Sam
Houston. May his spirit forever roam these windswept prairies.” – Traces of
Texas
