Not much in Newcastle these days. Most buildings downtown are vacant. A few dusty pickups creep along dusty streets. Away from downtown, streets are dirt, houses old, but not old enough to be worth anything.

In 1920, Newcastle’s population was 1,452. The 2019 estimated population was 573. There used to be coal mining near the Young County town, enough coal for the Wichita Falls and Southern Railroad to build a line connecting Newcastle with Wichita Falls. Mining began around 1908 and ended in 1942.

The population is around 94 percent white. About 16 percent of families and 18 percent of the overall population lives below the federal poverty line.

The Newcastle Independent School District has Pre-K through 12th grade. The school fields a six-man football team.
