The writer said his father had been on New Guinea during World War II.
“He never talked about
the war until I joined the Army. Even though I was a noncombatant (Medical
Corps), when he saw me in uniform, he opened up a little.
“He had a pug nose -- no cartilage and a deformed
nasalis bone. I asked him what happened. He said
"’A Jap hit me in the face with the butt of
his rifle.’
"’Good God,’ I said, ‘What happened then?’
"’I don't know, I passed out.’
"’Why didn't he kill you?’ I asked.
"’My bayonet was in his chest.’"
