Prepared for SHTF, JV
Ralph always had available what he termed
“My JV bugout bag,” olive green, heavy canvas, cylindrically shaped and half
the size of an old style army issue duffel bag. New army bags were black nylon,
with zippered compartments. Ralph disliked the new styles for practical
reasons: nylon melted, zippers were noisy, and black, not a color generally
found in nature, was too easy to see.
Ralph’s JV bag did not contain sufficient
SHTF survival goods and equipment. Neither did his larger bags. SHTF survival
goods are best stored in underground bunkers, reinforced garages or in strong
off-grid cabins in thick woods. The JV bag did contain things that might be
needed for a small-scale SHFT event, such as a tornado or hurricane. Additional
magazines and ammunition for his Colt Commander; six twenty-ounce bottles of
water in heavy plastic bottles, not the crumply kind; packages of dried fruits,
vegetables and meat; matches; a medium first aid kit; and a camouflage army
poncho filled Ralph’s JV bag. When leaving the house in the golf cart, Ralph
always put the bag in a metal container spot-welded to the rear cargo platform.
The container was secured with a lock, for which Ralph and Cassandra each had a
key.
