Col. Frank Leslie Dietrich died in 1997. I ran across his photograph while searching for something else.
Col. Dietrich wore two stars on his Combat Infantryman Badge. That is three wars as an infantry soldier. When a lieutenant colonel, Dietrich was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for actions as commander, 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 502nd Infantry Regiment in Vietnam. 2LT Dietrich was awarded his second Silver Star for actions on 24 July 1950, while serving in the Heavy Mortar Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in Korea. Almost seven years earlier, Staff Sgt. Dietrich was awarded his first Silver Star while with Co. C, 504th Parachute Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He also had a Purple Heart.
If any other soldier brought up a feat of necessity, Col. Dietrich could think: Been there, done that.
