My friend Joe Rooney (919th Engineer Company, 11th Armored Cavalry) sent me two helicopters and a book. One helicopter is green and white, with four rotor blades and requiring batteries; the other is balsa – some assembly required.
The book is Topography of Terror – Gestapo, SS and Reichssichereheitshauptamt on the Prinz-Albrecht-Terrain – A Documentation. Replete with photographs and copies of (translated) documents, the book should be a good read.
At last year’s reunion of the 11th Armored Cavalry’s Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia in Columbus, Ga., Joe brought a set of Bell Jet Ranger (OH-58) tail rotor blades, flying with the blades from the San Francisco area. I don’t know if the rotor blades were part of Joe’s carry-on luggage; but if so, they must have presented a mystery to flight attendants.
“Excuse me, Sir, but what are those?”
“Helicopter tail rotor blades.”
“Well, Sir, this is a Boeing 337. It has wings.”
At this year’s reunion, in San Antonio, I’ll see what I can do about getting a Florida alligator for Joe to keep in his California apartment.
