MLB’s other Austro-Hungary/Irish ball player

Frank Rooney, born Frank Rovny, Oct. 12, 1884, in Podebrady.

Rooney made his MLB debut on April 18, 1914, at age 29. He played in 12 games with the Indianapolis Hoosiers, going to bat 35 times, scoring one run. He had seven hits, including one triple and one home run, and batted in eight. He also stole two bases. His batting average was .220. Rooney played nine games at first base, fielding .980, with two errors on 103 total chances. His last game was June 6, 1914.

Rooney died April 6, 1977, in Bessemer, Mich. He was 92 years old.
