Last night I watched a film of Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Philharmonic Orchestra in Wagner's Tannhauser Overture. All the musicians were men. The performance was in 1948. These days the majority of philharmonic musicians are women. String sections often are all women. I have not read of any complaints from men on that disparity, but I have read of orchestra sponsors complaining about the lack of musicians of persons of color. Much of that complaining is from upper-class and upper-middle class persons of white pigmentation, who believe popular wrongs of the world will be put to right through acts of politics and transfers of money. The number of people who hade read Tom Wolfe's Radical Chic and Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers has declined somewhat.
