They want us gone, out of any picture of the future. They want us dead.

Twenty-five years ago after a session on Reconstruction, a student approached my desk. She was an intelligent young woman and had offered opinions in class. That day, she said her grandfather was in the Klan. “He’s in the good Klan,” she said, not that one born of racism and Reconstruction. As far as I know, that "good Klan" has not made itself known outside its membership or family knowledge.

That is the way of those who hate us, hate God and hate the guns we cling to, bitterly. They are the good people, good citizens of the world. They do not claim to be good Americans, because that is too nationalistic. Again, they want us gone. They want us dead.
