Giants pitcher Sam Coonrod: “I believe that I can’t kneel before anything besides God.”
I had hoped MLB would not go
down for this nonsense. Part of a continuing fantasy of what baseball is, I
suppose. I am reading “Our Game: An American Baseball History.” The book was
published in 1990. Its focus is on the game. More modern baseball “histories” tell us early players spent
as much time in saloons and brothels as they did on baseball fields. Early players
smoked cigars and cigarettes. (Gasp!) They were racists. I am not interested in
a player’s private life, but what he did between the white lines and how he did
it. Soon, we will be hit with accusations that Babe Ruth once said something
bad about somebody, that he drank to excess and he was a womanizer. Take him
down! Off with his head! Cap Anson, Ted Williams, Cy Young – dig deep enough
and find a statement proving each might have said something bad, oh bad, about something
or somebody.
