Public lashing should be first phase of punishment for travel company

Twenty-eight University of Texas at Austin students tested positive for coronavirus after a Spring Break trip to Cabo San Lucas.

Spring Break travel organizer JusCollege before the trips: Cabo San Lucas travelers don’t have anything to worry about. There is no danger from COVID-19 in Mexico. Oh, and your $2,000 booking fee is not refundable.

Later email: “’We’re currently in our 2nd week of Cabo and have had almost 5000 travelers, all with no issues,’ the company said to a UT student in March 12 email obtained by the American-Statesman. 'Flights have been fully operational and we have had nearly 100% turn out. Our events are completely operational with zero impact from COVID-19 thus far.’”

March 25 email: The company “has postponed spring break trips and is working on credits or partial refunds for those who can’t attend the new trip dates.

What’s really rich is the philosophy that “nearly 100% turn out” and flights “fully operational” proves there are no problems with coronavirus.

Update: Of the 70 students who took that Spring Break trip, 44 have tested positive.
