George B. Jackson was born in 1850 in Brunswick County, Virginia. Jackson enlisted in the Army following the Civil War and eventually was posted to Fort Concho, near San Angelo, Texas. He was discharged in 1875 and opened a saloon in San Angelo. He later bought ranch land 35 miles east of San Angelo. He died in 1900 in San Antonio.

“In 1897, President William McKinley appointed George B. Jackson, an African American former buffalo soldier as customs collector at Presidio, a position that he held until his death in 1900. Jackson, a businessman from San Angelo, was considered the ‘wealthiest colored man in Texas’ in the second half of the 19th century.”
