Saturday afternoon I heard what sounded like someone yelling out back. I went to see what it was. There was nothing in sight that could have made the sound, but waddling away from the pool cage was a mamma duck, followed by four babies. They went to the water and got in.
Last week when the alligator drifted around the right side of the pond, all the ducks were clustered at the left side. At that time, I did not know ducklings were around, and could be they weren’t yet.
This morning all the adult ducks were on the far bank, individuals for the most part, and not clustered together. Could be they knew the alligator was somewhere, but none wanted to go into the water and find out where.
A few minutes ago I looked out and saw nine mature ducks floating at this end of the pond. No babies, though. I guess the adults put the babies in the shade and told them to stay put. Most likely the adults know where the alligator is.
