There used to be this place called Baen Free Library, where readers could download free books. Then Jim Baen died, and the Free Library doesn’t work anymore.
I downloaded a few books from the Free Library. I bought more from bookstores than I downloaded. That means Baen’s idea worked. Some writers argued that giving books away was not a serious free-market idea. Baen reportedly replied that readers at libraries did not pay for books. (They do, in the form of city or county taxes, but Baen’s argument is, on the whole, logical.)
Sometimes ideas die with the originator.
