In which I tell a Washington city how to solve a problem

‘City Considering Closing Park’

“The Shelton City Commission will be briefed Monday night on possibly closing Sixth Street Park. According to a briefing document, the City’s Parks Department has been receiving complaints about the activities at the Park over the past year. Staff reports the park has become a popular place for youth and at times as many as 30 youth are in the park at a time. This has led to behavior affecting the quality of life for neighbors (graffiti, drinking), vandalism and destruction of park amenities and landscaping. The Parks Advisory Committee is recommending closing Sixth Street Park to rehabilitate its facilities. This closure would be effective at the end of the month and last until next June. The Shelton City Commission will be briefed on the situation and request during their 6 PM meeting Monday in the Courtroom at the Shelton Civic Center.”

Put the offenders on community service cleaning up the park, because you know the yoots have trashed it, if the Parks Department has had a year’s worth of complaints. Get adult volunteers to supervise, which is what the yoots needed to begin with. Although … If you look at the link, you will see that the city does a lot of legislating what people will not do, so it could be the citizenry doesn’t take initiative on things.
