Back in March, I sent this to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.):

“The Honorable Senator Rand Paul

“Senator Paul:

“Would you please explain why you sent a letter to my 87-year-old mother-in-law asking her to contribute $25 to $1,000 to the National Association for Gun Rights? She receives a monthly Social Security check of less than $1,500. Does your political philosophy include badgering widows for part of their Social Security? I find your letter most distasteful. Worse, your attempt to get money from an almost 90-year-old woman indicates the state of the modern Republican Party.

“Robert Merriman”

Today I got a reply:

“Dear Mr. Merriman,

“Thank you for contacting me regarding the correspondence you received in support of the Second Amendment. I appreciate hearing your thoughts on the matter.

“You might hve received a letter from a gun rights organization seeking support for the efforts to defend the Second Amendment. I strongly support the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

“There are many in Washington who give lip service to the Second Amendment, but vote to restrict gun ownership once they begin serving in public office. Gun control laws only restrice access to responsibkle gun ownership. High risk individuals will still be able to acquire firearms even with an increase in prevention. I do not support any proposed gun control law which would limit the right to gun ownership by those who are responsible, law-abiding citizens.

“Rest assured should this issue be debated before the Senate, I will keep your thoughts in mind.”

“Sincerely,
“Rand Paul”

Well. Looks as though the senator’s mail readers have as much understanding of what they read as do those who buy mailing lists … None at all.

  1. He is running for President of the US in 2016, For Heaven's sake. He and his staff should have at least apologized for intruding on the privacy of a citizen (considering how Rand Paul claims to honor privacy and private property) and should have been much more considerate of you and your grandmother in responding to your complaint about hassling her for a contribution.

At least, however, you received a somewhat individual reply! There are LOTS of these Congressvermin who don't even bother to reply, or who just send a 'form letter" thanking you for a response.

It IS disgusting that a party, and a candidate with MILLIONS of $$$$ should exploit controversies which have no business even occurring in a free society to rip off $$$$$ from taxpayers!

Rand Paul is probably the best of a bad-VERY bad-lot. If you didn't bother voting in 2016, nobody could fault you!

  2. Mr. Meller,
Thank you for reading and especially for writing. Unless you receive money-begging letters from politicians, you cannot begin to understand the disdain with which they hold Americans.
