Oaks, Okla., is one of those towns started by missionaries who displaced with the Five Civilized Tribes from the Southeastern United States to what is now Oklahoma.
The missionaries were of the Moravian Church, which stems from John Hus, Czech opponent of the Roman Catholic Church. Hus was burned the stake on July 6, 1415. The Moravian missionaries set up a mission with the Cherokee in Springplace, Ga. In 1902, Oaks-Mission School was formed, by Danish Lutherans.
The 2000 population was 412 – 72.57% Native American; 13.59% white; 0.24 % Asian; 0.49% others; 13.11% two or more races.
Oaks-Mission High School teams are known as Warriors.
Just as a note: Oaks-Mission on Oct. 13, 2014, defeated Welch 52-6. The Warriors scored 36 points in the first quarter and 16 in the second quarter, none in the second half of the game. On Nov. 15, the Warriors lost to Weleetka, 48-26 in the Class B playoff.
