As of the 2010 Census, population was 2,190, a 1.5 percent decrease from the 2000 Census.
Ethnically, the population is 27.89 percent Native American; 3.59 African American; .18 percent “Other;” 1.03 percent Hispanic or Latino. Dominant population was 63.18 percent white, but white is not an ethnicity and is not counted in its separate parts.
The town was birthplace to Kenneth D. Bailey, posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions on Guadalcanal; and to Ernest E. Evans, posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions off Samar Island, the Philippines.
About 16.8 percent of families and 20.5 percent of the population live below the poverty line.
