In which I tell a Washington city how to solve a problem

‘City Considering Closing Park’

“The Shelton City Commission will be briefed Monday night on possibly closing Sixth Street Park. According to a briefing document, the City’s Parks Department has been receiving complaints about the activities at the Park over the past year. Staff reports the park has become a popular place for youth and at times as many as 30 youth are in the park at a time. This has led to behavior affecting the quality of life for neighbors (graffiti, drinking), vandalism and destruction of park amenities and landscaping. The Parks Advisory Committee is recommending closing Sixth Street Park to rehabilitate its facilities. This closure would be effective at the end of the month and last until next June. The Shelton City Commission will be briefed on the situation and request during their 6 PM meeting Monday in the Courtroom at the Shelton Civic Center.”

OK, Shelton, Wash., here’s what you do: Arrest the yoots causing the problems. Put the offenders on community service cleaning up the park, because you know the yoots have trashed it, if the Parks Department has had a year’s worth of complaints. Get adult volunteers to supervise, which is what the yoots needed to begin with. Although … If you look at the link, you will see that the city does a lot of legislating what people will not do, so it could be the citizenry doesn’t take initiative on things. Looking at some genealogy stuff

and found somebody who probably isn't an ancestor (Virginia, 1646), mostly because he spelled his name "Merryman." He lived in interesting times. But, we all do.

“Whereas it appeareth to the Court by Attestacon out of Holland as ----- by the oath of John Merryman that Capt Derrickson carryed home in his shipp a maide servant by name Trinity Slough belonging to Mr. Richard Glover, the Court doy therefore order that the sd Richard Glover shall have an attachment against the estate of ye sd Capt. Derrickson for satisfacon of ye sd Maide servant & damages yereby sustained.” – November 1646.

A couple of cases before, John Merryman was on the other side of the court, to wit:

“Whereas it appearey to the court by the confession of John Merryman that he stands indebted to Thomas Harrwod the sume of one thousand powndes of tob: for consideration of a man to keepe his booke & rec. tob: in ye imployment of Capt. Derrickson as alsoe twoe hundred powndes of tob: more wch he paid to Capt. Chri: Calthropp at ye request of ye sd Merryman for ye sd Derrickson's debt. The Cort doy Therefore order yat ye sd Merryman shall make payment of ye sd twelve hundred powndes of tob: to ye sd Thomas Harrwod with Courth charges within tenn dayes ells exec.”

This one flies in the face of feminist history, which has said for the last 40 years that women could not own property.

In the last will and testament of Wm. Pryor: “I give & bequeath to my eldest daughter Margareth my whole pte of the ship Honor and five hundred and ninety one powndes sterling.

“I give & bequeath to my daughter Mary five hundred pownds sterling.”

“I give & bequeath to my eldest daughter Margaret the whole divident of land where I now live with all the appurtenances thereto belonging as howses, orchards or the like, but for the rest and remainder of my land, I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary.”

This makes too much sense. We must make sure it does not receive nationwide exposure.

“Racism is a resource and like every other resource, it's in danger of running out. We hit Peak Racism decades ago. Peak Sexism peaked even earlier. Even Peak Homophobia peaked a while back. The cool kids are trying to push Islamophobia while peddling worn copies of Edward Said's Orientalism that the campus book store refuses to buy back at more than 10% of the sale price, but once you get past the keffiyahs and a 10 year-old photo of what looks like a guy in black Klanwear in Iraq, (which looks like the world's most confusing hate crime), the calm waves of the Pacific Ocean are there telling you that maybe it's time to put away that thesis on "Othering in The Simpsons" and enjoy your job as Director of Sensitivity Innovations in the Department of Human Resources.

”The system isn't white power or black power. It's just the system. It's a bunch of white guys who despise the South and wish they had a black friend, deciding which black guy to use for their diversity quota. They're doing it for the same reason that they display books they never read and invite interesting people over for boring dinner parties. Because it makes them seem smart. Because it makes them feel like something more than the overseers of the same repressive dreary system that exists to implement unfairness for the benefit of a few.”

Thieves

Organizations that use fear and intimidation to convince elderly people to give money, claiming to save Social Security and Medicare and promising to impeach Obama:

Americans for Prosperity – Arlington, Va.

National Senior Action Council – Arlington, Va.

The National Campaign to Impeach Obama (a project of Federation of Responsible Citizens) – Washington, D.C.

Campaign to Limit Congressional Terms (a program of Our Generation) – Washington, D.C., although the mail permit is from Frederick, Md.

Political Headquarters 2013 (a project of FRC) – Washington, D.C.

Emergency Committee to Save Medicare – Washington, D.C.

The Seniors Center – Washington, D.C.

Impeach Obama Campaign (a project of Policy Issues Institute) – Washington, D.C.

The following sent fear letters in mail tubes, all under mail permit #16, Fredericksburg, Va.:

American Federation of Senior Citizens (a project of FRC) – Alexandria, Va.

The National Campaign to Guarantee Social Security (FRC) – Alexandria, Va.

National Retirement Security Task Force (a project of the National Center for Public Policy Research) – Washington, D.C.

Emergency Committee to Save Medicare (a project of Policy Issues Institute) – Irvine, Calif.

National Senior Action Council – Washington, D.C.

United States Investigative Unit (Policy Issues Institute) – Irvine, Calif.

The last one has a rather ominous sound. Google search shows:

Apparently, a lawyer named Maureen E. Otis runs the thing, somehow from Stafford, Texas, and Laguna Nigel, Calif., with mailouts using the same permit from Fredericksburg, Va., as several others.

Stafford is a town of about 18,000 and is surrounded by Houston and Sugar Land.

Maureen E. Otis, President.

“A former Certified Public Accountant and an attorney, is a nationally recognized non-profit law expert. Maureen has served as a member of the faculty for the Association of Fundraising Professionals (formerly NSFRE) International Conferences. Her law firm, Law Offices of Maureen E. Otis, P.C., represents non-profit organizations, professional fundraisers and fund raising consultants in their efforts to comply with state charitable solicitation laws.

“In addition to overseeing the operations of American Caging, Maureen is responsible for managing our Escrow and Accounting department and coordinating client relationships with various depository banks.”

I read a few other sites mentioning Otis, and I am disturbed. She runs numerous political action committees. She is making millions.

Listening to Blonde on Blonde

The album is a two-record set. That’s right – record. Vinyl. Bought in 1971. Or 1972. Played today on a turntable that also plays CDs and thumbdrive thingys.

For Christmas, Priscilla, the smartest woman in the world, gave to me the turntable/CD/thumdrive thingy/AM-FM radio device.

I haven’t played vinyl albums since … Yeah, it’s been that long.

Archaeologists find Thor’s hammer

“The hammer was found in the granite bedrock of Södermalm island in Stockholm, where engineers are excavating a tunnel to redirect the suburban commuter trains in one of the capital's biggest infrastructure investments since the metro was built.

"’It was a case of shock and awe when one of my engineers recognized engravings on the object to be Norse runes,’ Citybanan project manager Johan Leber told The Local.”
