'Gay Americans Arrested for Exposing Themselves at Buddhist Temple in Bangkok'

You’ve heard of the Ugly American? These two are butt-ugly Americans:

Immigration police arrested two US citizens at Don Mueang airport Tuesday night on warrants that charged they posed for pictures showing their naked bottoms at Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).

Wat Arun is a centuries-old Buddhist temple in Bangkok.

The culprits were identified as Joseph and Travis, both 38 years old, a “self-professed gay couple.” They were arrested at the airport while trying to leave Thailand, and charged with public nudity.

According to Pol Col Choengron Rimpadee, deputy spokesman for the immigration police, tourists should show respect for places of cultural importance. The whole world isn’t San Francisco — or a Melbourne train platform — quite yet.

“A massive ice giant may be traveling through the outer solar system. Dubbed ‘Planet Nine,’ the hypothetical world was proposed to exist after scientists noticed that a handful of objects beyond Pluto had been shaken up in unusual orbits. Search parties have formed to find the unseen planet, with optimistic hopes of spotting it within a year.

"’It's not crazy; this is the kind of stuff people are finding all the time,’ co-discoverer Mike Brown, at the California Institute of Technology, told Space.com earlier this year. Brown and lead author Konstantin Batygin, also at CalTech, published a paper in January 2016 suggesting that a massive planet could be stirring up the icy bodies of the Kuiper Belt, a ring of material at the edge of the solar system.

(I don’t think Brown means “go out there” in his “go out there” statement, but rather take a long, long look out there. Or, maybe he gives “go out there” literal meaning.)

Pluto has been de-planetized, so maybe Planet Nine can take its place.

“Brown University to Allow Students to ‘Self-Identify’ as Persons of Color”

“Brown University is implementing a change to its graduate school application that will allow applicants to ‘self-identify’ as persons of color. Multiple efforts by The College Fix to clarify the details of this change were ignored by campus officials.

The policy comes as a result of complaints made by graduate students on the Graduate School advisory board that international and Asian American students are not treated as members of historically underrepresented groups by the university, according to The Brown Daily Herald.

One graduate student, Lydia Kelow-Bennett, told The Herald that this decision has led to ‘institutional invisibility’ for these students. Brown defines historically underrepresented groups as ‘American Indian, Alaskan Native, African American, Hispanic or Latinx and Native Hawaiian and/or Pacific Islander.’ The school’s diversity initiatives are intended to benefit members of these groups.

Brown’s criteria for historical underrepresentation ‘caused some students to not receive invitations to certain events, such as a multicultural student dinner,’ The Herald reported.

How allowing applicants to self-identify as persons of color will affect policy relating to the diversity initiatives, and whether the university will take any steps to verify applicants’ self-identification, remain unclear. The Fix reached out multiple times to Brown’s graduate admissions office to inquire into how Brown would ensure that applicants were telling the truth about their self-identified ethnicity. The office did not respond.”
