‘Wise Guy’ flies again

A BUFF nicknamed “Wise Guy” this week became the second B-52 Stratofortress ever to be returned to service from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, the airplane cemetery known as the “Boneyard.”

Another BUFF nicknamed “Ghost Rider” was the first to come back from the dead.

The bomber was was selected to replace another B-52 that was damaged in a fire, said Maj. Phillip Ventura, spokesman for the 2nd Bomb Wing.

On Jan. 28, 2014, an oxygen leak caused a fire on a B-52H, which was undergoing routine maintenance, Ventura said in an email Thursday to Air Force Times. Although the plane was not destroyed, repairing the damage was deemed to be too costly.

Global Strike Command decided the most cost effective option was to replace the damaged bomber with another B-52H in storage at the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group, at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

After “Ghost Rider” was selected to replace the damaged B-52H, crews from the 2nd and 307th Bomb Wings spent 70 days at Davis-Monthan making the plane able to fly to Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, he said.

Woman who stabbed daughter, set fire, gets three life sentences

Tulsa County District Judge Dawn Moody sentenced (Taheerah) Ahmad to three concurrent life sentences on two counts of child neglect and one count of assault by means likely to produce death, with a consecutive 10-year sentence on a charge of first-degree arson.

Before Moody issued the sentence, prosecutors played the nearly hour-long tape of Ahmad’s interview with investigators after her arrest on May 15, 2018. In the interview, Ahmad referenced her “so-called daughters” when initially discussing the 11-year-old she had stabbed with a dagger and garden pickaxe more than 100 times and the then-9-year-old who had escaped to run for help during the attack.

This is just weird

Two German medieval combat enthusiasts killed with crossbows were shot through the heart with arrows and a third fatally through the neck, reports say.

The three were found in a hotel room in Bavaria on Saturday, along with three modern crossbows. Two were used to fire the arrows, prosecutors say.

A man and woman were in bed, hand in hand, impaled with arrows. A woman hit in the neck was lying on the floor.

The deaths, near Passau, were linked to two more deaths in north Germany.

Passau prosecutors are sure there was nobody else in the hotel room apart from the three who died. There was no sign of any struggle. The hotel is in an idyllic spot by the River Ilz, popular with hikers.

Chicago-area police warn of zombie raccoons

RIVERSIDE, Ill. (AP) — The warning about “zombie raccoons” may sound like something out of a bad television show, but a suburban Chicago police department says they present serious dangers to family pets.

The critters are called zombies because those carrying the distemper virus often stagger on their hind legs and bare their teeth. Riverside’s police department says if they bite dogs they can transmit the serious disease that can cause respiratory and gastrointestinal problems and affect the nervous system.

The department issued its warning after fielding calls about raccoons acting oddly and says anyone who sees such an animal should call police. Chief Tom Weitzel tells the Chicago Tribunethat officers will put the animals down and public works crews will dispose of their carcasses.

Traveling

This morning, my oldest started out on a motorcycle trip that will take him from Florida to Maine, this journey to the last of the lower 48 states since his retirement from the Army almost five years ago. He also went to Hawaii on his first mid-tour Iraq deployment. Forty-nine states. 

Metal detectorists find more than 3,000 Roman coins

Metal detector enthusiasts discovered a hoard of Roman copper coins near the village of Rauceby in Lincolnshire in July of 2017. They had searched the area for years with only a few minor finds to show for it. This time when their detectors signaled the presence of metal, when they dug they found a massive quantity of Roman coins.

They alerted the authorities and a full excavation of the site ensued. Lincolnshire County Council archaeologist Adam Daubney and Sam Bromage from the University of Sheffield unearthed the ceramic pot that the coin hoard was buried in and  small separate hoard of 10 coins. All told, more than 3000 copper-alloy  were found. It is the largest coin hoard from the 4th century ever found in Britain.
