“Ladies and Gentlemen I accept the flowers as a memento of reconciliation between the white and colored races of the southern states. I accept it more particularly as it comes from a colored lady, for if there is any one on God's earth who loves the ladies I believe it is myself. (Immense applause and laughter.) I came here with the jeers of some white people, who think that I am doing wrong. I believe I can exert some influence, and do much to assist the people in strengthening fraternal relations, and shall do all in my power to elevate every man to depress none. (Applause.) I want to elevate you to take positions in law offices, in stores, on farms, and wherever you are capable of going. I have not said anything about politics today. Russia is planning to phase out paper passports within three years as part of its national digitization program, drawing support as well as criticism over privacy concerns, according to the official government website.

The government resumed discussions on issuing digital passports last fall, five years after it initially considered the idea. Cost estimates for the overhaul range from 114.4 billion rubles ($1.8 billion) to 144 billion rubles ($2.2 billion).

The first digital passports, which will take the form of plastic cards, will be issued next July in Moscow, Deputy Prime Minister Maxim Akimov said Wednesday. 

“Those who don’t want to change their paper passports…can keep them to the grave,” Akimov told reporters. 

The digital ID card will have a 10-year expiration date and contain an electronic chip bearing nearly all of the passport holder’s personal information. 

The electronic passport might also come in the form of a mobile app, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said during a cabinet session before Akimov spoke. 

A digital passport lifts bureaucratic hurdles but also exposes citizens to hacking and personal data leaks, according to industry experts surveyed by the Novaya Gazeta newspaper. 

Others told the Vedomosti business daily that the transition period toward an cloud-based system could pose technical and other difficulties for new passport holders. 

The proposal has also attracted criticism from the Russian Orthodox Church, which said the collection and retention of personal data threatens privacy.

The government has been pursuing a $53-billion Digital Economy Program since 2017 to help roll out digital technologies nationwide by the last year of Vladimir Putin’s presidential term in 2024. Officials have predicted that, as part of the program, four in five Russians will have a digital profile by 2025.

‘A determined few’

Former Navy SEAL Dorn Raso climbed a flag pole to reattach an American flag that had become separated from its lanyard.

Mr. Raso said: “This was my fourth attempt at trying to get up and fix the flag. I couldn’t go by this flag this morning and not give it everything I had. The gold stars on this monument and the sacrifice that has been made for us all was something I wasn’t just going to pass by. This flag pole climb reminded me about EVERYTHING in life.”

And encouraging his fellow Americans to do what is right: “It doesn’t take many, it just takes a determined and convicted few. I believe with all my heart and soul there is a wave of patriots in this country growing in strength and confidence each day. While we watch parts of our country fall to mainstream confusion, complacency, and ignorance, there is a few that are willing to climb or stand or do whatever it takes.”

National teacher union votes down student learning proposals

Approves: Fundamental right to abortion under Roe v. Wade;  enthused over reparations for slave descendants; called on the U.S. government to “accept responsibility for the destabilization” of Central American countries and that this destabilization is “a root cause of the recent increase of asylum seekers in the United States”…; “supporting the Black Lives Matter movement; and teaching the concept of ‘White Fragility’ (which they explain is produced by ‘white supremacy culture’) in NEA professional development.”

“A similar focus was evident in the NEA conference agenda. During the convention, there were breakout sessions on topics like ‘Racial and Social Justice,’ ‘Ethnic and Minority Affairs,’ and ‘Women’s Issues.’ Along with those discussions, delegates heard from a smorgasbord of progressive left warriors like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Bill de Blasio. Meanwhile, per the convention agenda, there wasn’t a single session devoted to curriculum and instruction, nor raising student test scores. (Emphasis added.)

The authors note: “The NEA represents 3 million members, mostly public school teachers of all walks of life, from all political persuasions — 60% of whom have identified as Republicans or independents.”

One might guess that few of those 1.8 million were at the convention.
