The same who, when hungry, actually stripped muscle from living humans to eat? The same who used Chinese civilians for testing diseases and pathogens for biological warfare?”

The dedication is the same as a streamer on a movie well forgotten about the Nazi German occupation of Europe: “They had heroes, too.” No, they did not.

The thing about dedicating Midway to any Japanese military falls right in with current Progressive philosophy and politics: All thoughts are equal (except thoughts by white people); all religions are equal (except Christianity and Judaism); and all persons of color have, at one time or another, been forced into war by white privilege.

The greatest thing to happen in the United States in the last month

There was a World Series. My team did not win, but for the first time in years both teams were equal in talent and in performance. The Houston Astros and the Washington Nationals played good baseball. Both teams had good pitching at times, excellent pitching at times. Hitters hit situational singles. Alex Bregman and Anthony Rendon showed why the third basemen are likely Most Valuable Players in their leagues. 

A good World Series -- good hitting, good pitching, good defense, sound baseball.

A good time was had by all.

90-year-old Russian fisherman gets suspended sentence for using hemp seeds as bait

Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Teach a man to fish with hemp seeds, and you might be criminally convicted.

A Russian court has convicted a 90-year-old philosophy professor on charges of drug possession after planting and drying hemp to use as fishing bait.

Nikolai Ryabov, a professor at Moscow State University of Surveying and Cartography, had planted hemp at his dacha several decades ago to “use it as fishing bait,” mixing the plant’s seeds with oatmeal. The bushes continued to grow on their own, and last fall, Ryabov again gathered some of the hemp to create fishing bait.

The Sarayevo district court in the Ryazan region, a three-hour drive from Moscow, handing him a suspended sentence of three years and eight months with a six-month probationary period for large-scale drug possession. 

Ryabov pleaded guilty to the charges and said he never smoked the hemp or used any other drugs. In a press release Tuesday, the court said it took Ryabov’s age, profession, status as a World War II veteran and guilty plea into account and made his sentence more moderate.

Ryabov had previously been convicted in 2018 for growing, collecting and storing cannabis on his property.

According to the court’s press release, growing hemp wasn’t prohibited at the time Ryabov first planted it in his garden decades ago. “It used to grow everywhere and was used for the production of oil and clothes,” it said.

But it's illegal now, and that's all that matters.

AMMAN, Jordan — An assailant stabbed eight people at the popular archaeological site of Jerash in northern Jordan on Wednesday, according to the authorities, who said the man had been arrested. The motive for the attack remained unclear.

Four foreign tourists and four Jordanians — a tour guide, a truck driver, and two police officers, one of whom tried to stop the attack — were wounded and taken to a hospital, a spokesman for the Jordanian police said.

Reality bites Maryland sanctuary county

Backyard bones of Stalin victims leads government to do nothing

A few months ago, Kvasha decided to extend his house. When he started digging the foundations, he made a gruesome discovery. He found bones: skulls, arms, legs, ribcages. He kept digging up more. There are now more than 10 sacks of them in his garden — the remains of more than 60 people. "First I dug up one skull, then another, then it just didn't stop," he said.

In far-off Blagoveshchensk, Vitaly Kvasha says that, although he informed the authorities, they're reluctant to deal with this evidence of the country's history. He has repeatedly asked the municipality not to leave him to deal with the grisly find all on his own. "For a whole year I kept asking the authorities for help," he explains. "They said they didn't have either the money or the personnel. The only thing they did promise me was that they would come and pick up the remains. But I would have to dig them out myself."

Meanwhile, a private funeral parlor has helped to ensure that at least a few of the victims have found a final resting place — in the local cemetery. But Kvasha laments the fact that their graves are marked only by a small metal plate with a number engraved on it. They have been denied their names, and their dignity.
