Why is it...

First time I read about an Indian-modified-tree trail marker, I said, “Come on.” The idea of trail marker trees, though, has caught on, much like “dream catcher” and one I read a couple dozen years ago that before arrival of white man and his horses, Indians were pretty much vegetarians. Yep. That is an idea among present-day Indian vegetarians. Which leads to a joke: “Vegetarian” is Indian for “Lousy hunter.”

The thing with the bent trees, though, shows people are all too likely to take things as explained by a specific political belief. Anything that purports to show Indian harmony with nature must be truth.

But, if bent trees are supposed to show the direction to a trail, why are they always found next to trails?

And, why are bent trees always pretty much the same shape? The one that means “rough trail ahead” is the same shape as one that means “good water up the road.”

After the 1861-65 war, when Eastern newspapers began to report on settlement of Western lands, politics shifted to “Lo, the poor Red Man.” Eli McCullough, in The Son, asks an Eastern newspaper reporter which tribe he is from. Before the flustered white man can reply, McCullough says (paraphrased), “Oh, that’s right. You killed off all of yours.” And yet, he is saying, you come out here and try to tell us how to run our business.

Kerry tells China how to run its climate change

And China says, “We will do things our way.”

From Maggie’s Farm and Zero Hedge

Kerry “presented a list of proposals for Beijing to accelerate its climate efforts. They included a public commitment to the 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) limit of global warming targeted in the 2015 Paris Agreement, a definite time frame for carbon emissions to peak before 2030, and a moratorium on financing overseas coal-fired projects.”

China replied: "China already has its own plans and road map for achieving its climate goals."

A long walk for a short drive

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” – Thomas Edison.

(When I was younger, say 60 or so years ago, I spent most of my time not looking for opportunity. There were books to read, clouds to consider, creeks to wade through. Maps to study and a mind that wondered what was out there in those lands represented by lines on a piece of paper. Some people think and work and invent things. Others read and dream and maybe go for long walks to see things far from home.

(At a high school reunion many years ago, a woman from my class said, “You didn’t get far from home, did you.” My wife and three kids and I lived about 60 miles away. I thought, “You have no idea how many miles I traveled in order to wind up an hour’s drive away.”)

The story probably doesn’t say that

“Women can attend universities in Hungary for over 125 years”

Story notes: Women “were allowed to be university students for the first time in Hungary circa 125 years ago.

Some other interesting things, as well.

Before she went to TRADOC, LTG Gervais was director of the Army’s Synthetic Training Environment Cross Functional Team. She also was commandant of US Army CBRN School and deputy commanding general of the Army’s Combined Arms Center. She was commissioned as a chemical officer, so it would appear she has years of experience at blowing smoke.

Remains of SGT Francis W. Wiemerslage, B-17G ball turret gunner, identified

SGT Francis W. Wiemerslage was ball turret gunner on B-17G 43-24148 in the 549th Bomb Squadron. His bomber was shot down by German aircraft on 2 March 1945. Of the 10-man crew, two survived and were POW for the remaining two months of the war.

SGT Wiemarslage’s remains were identified on 31 August 2O21.

Cause of 549th Squadron aircraft losses most often is “Lost to enemy aircraft” and “Lost by flak/fire.” Several are noted as “Mid-air collision.” Then there is “Failed to return” and “Disappeared.” The squadron had far more aircraft losses than were listed as “Returned to USA” following end of hostilities.

The life of an aircrew member is never safe.

Uh, what?

TULSA, Oklahoma -

A 14-year-old boy charged with stealing a truck, running from troopers and killing an innocent mother and daughter in a crash, has had his case dismissed in state court.

Elias Gonzales is a member of a recognized tribe, so the state doesn't have jurisdiction to prosecute him.

Tulsa County prosecutors charged Gonzales as an adult with first-degree murder. The federal government will have to pick up the case, but they will have to get special permission from the tribe in order to prosecute Gonzales, because he is a minor.
