Citizens caused the problems

Wednesday’s walk to the Capitol.

From The Tennessee Star.

“A metro police officer told us, said I would advise you not to go there, over there. And he said there’s trouble. And I said, well, what do you mean by trouble? He said, well citizens. And I said but what kind of citizens what do you mean? And he wouldn’t elaborate on anything.

The best birthday cake ever

My wife baked pound cake for my 75th birthday yesterday. Whatever degree of good anybody else’s pound cake attains, my wife’s is at least two times better. We have been married 48 1/2 years. She has made at least 55 pound cakes, and each has been the same degree of good.

My wife’s pound cake is not that smooth, arced thing made and sold by commercial bakeries. No. Her pound cake is Bundt-pan-size, with almost a crust of ridges. I should stop and just say her pound cake is delicious.

Priscilla, Michael, Kathleen and I had cake with strawberries and whipped cream. Delicious. But I repeat myself.

I asked my wife what were the ingredients. I should have known, after 48 1/2 years, and I sort of did. Flour, a little sugar, butter and eggs, my wife said. Six eggs.

When I heard the six eggs part, I said, “Breakfast!” Six eggs might sound like a lot, but when whipped and mixed with the other ingredients, those half dozen eggs are spread out.

At supper last night, I mentioned to my wife that she, Michael and Kathleen could have half the cake. “The rest is mine,” I said.

I am looking forward to several breakfasts of the best pound cake ever. Ever.

No Irish in Massachusetts

Proposals concerning public health for the colony of Massachusetts:

“Court, considering the cruel and malignant spirit that has from time to time been manifest in the Irish nation against the English nation, do hereby declare their prohibition of bringing any Irish, men, women, or children, into this jurisdiction, on the penalty of £50 sterling to each inhabitant who shall buy of any merchant, shipmaster, or other agent any such person or persons so transported by them; which fine shall be by the country's marshall levied on conviction of some magistrate or court, one-third to be to the use of the informer, and two-thirds to the country. This act to be in force six months after the publication of this order.

“October 29, 1654.”

‘Americans do not have a reliable source of information’

From The Tennessee Star.

By Rabbi Dov Fischer

The Mainstream Media Are to blame for the D.C. rioting. Through four years they relentlessly pursued a single-minded goal: to take down the fairly-and-squarely democratically elected presidency of Donald Trump. Towards that end, they escalated non-stories into major “news” and elevated non-entities into major public figures. As they did in 2014 with the tragic crash of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, they contorted serious news into theater and abandoned their duties to investigate honestly and report dispassionately, fairly, and responsibly.

They highlighted stories that belonged on back pages, and they blacked-out or back-paged stories that belonged above the fold on front pages. They carefully selected spokespeople aligned with their liberal-progressive ideologies as their sources for quotation, and they discarded press releases and ignored statements issued by significant voices whom they chose to blackout or blacklist.  When selecting dramatic photos to highlight stories, they chose the pictures that told their ideological narrative and censored those that depicted other realities.  Even as they mocked Kellyanne Conway for imperfectly misstating an important point she intended to convey during a “Meet the Press” interview in January 2017, they daily advanced “alternate facts.”

As a result, Americans do not have a reliable source of information. A society is imperiled when information — not opinion — is so unreliable that no one knows what to believe.

From Chris Hedges, who says he is a socialist

At Lone Star Parson.

The seizure of control of the economy by a class of global speculators and corporations has ruined the lives of the very groups the Democrats pretend to lift up...

The power of politicians such as Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or Mitch McConnell comes from being able to funnel corporate money to anointed candidates. In a functioning political system, one not saturated with corporate cash, they would not hold power. They have transformed what the Roman philosopher Cicero called a commonwealth, a res publica, a “public thing” or the “property of a people,” into an instrument of pillage and repression on behalf of a global corporate oligarchy.

The tinder that could ignite violent conflagrations lies ominously stacked around us. It may be triggered by Trump’s defeat in the election. Millions of disenfranchised white Americans, who see no way out of their economic and social misery, struggling with an emotional void, are seething with rage against a corrupt ruling class and bankrupt liberal elite that betrayed them. They are tired of the political stagnation, grotesque, mounting social inequality and the punishing fallout from the pandemic. Millions more alienated young men and women, also locked out of the economy and with no realistic prospect for advancement or integration, gripped by the same emotional void, have harnessed their fury in the name of tearing down the governing structures and anti-fascism. These polarized extremes are inching closer and closer to violence.

The news according to Apple

My watch just informed me: "The world reacted in horror as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol..."

Perhaps a more accurate lead would be: "People who think like us were surprised when supposed Trump supporters broke into the Capitol building Wednesday."

Horror?

Sputnik News: 'Trump supporters storm Congress, setting stage for coup.'

RT: 'As US confirms its descent into chaos and depravity, embolden China looks on with growing confidence.'

The Moscow Times: 'Russia sees US democracy "limping" after Capital stormed'

and

'Putin silent on Washington unrest as Russian foreign ministry calls U.S. election system archaic.'

Daily News Hungary: No mention.

Times of Israel: 'Over 50 cops hurt in US Capitol riot; officer who killed woman placed on leave.'

and

'Schumer urges Trump's cabinet to remove president from office.'

Not one mention of "horror" in foreign newspapers or news sites.

Leftist US press has a habit of impressing its own views on everything.

Told to feel this, feel that, 'I no longer feel anything at all'

From American Digest

I once gave to all who asked. Now I give to none. Once a year I write checks to funds for widows and orphans of police, firemen, and soldiers killed in the line of duty. Beyond that, I find I can no longer spare a quarta. And when I hear, in the back of my mind, the old Depression anthem “Brother Can You Spare a Dime” I find that although I can spare it, I no longer want to give it.

It has taken decades of ceaseless hectoring but at long last my compassion account in the Bank of Human Kindness is overdrawn. I’m tapped out. I still try to care but I find, if I am honest, I couldn’t care less.

I suppose this makes me a bad person. In the land that is more and more ruled by those eager to cadge money from me or pick my pockets “for the common good” I’m just no damned good to any of them. It doesn’t bother me any more. I have become, as the song says, “comfortably numb.”

I’ve been told, so often and so stridently, to feel this and to feel that and to feel for the downtrodden of the world, that I find I no longer feel anything at all. I don’t think I’m alone in not caring. I think caring and compassion, now that it has been institutionalized enough to demand caring and compassion, has finally found its limit.
