There are, of course, the hewers of wood and carriers of water, but they don’t live there. Among the hordes of homeless and druggies, defecating in the streets, tourists are staying away by the thousands.

A man I know, after recuperating from Viet Cong-induced bullet holes and released from the Army, decided to make his camp in the Haight-Ashbury area, circa 1968, the year after the oft-noted but never existed “Summer of Love.” The city was violent, he said. Even among, especially among, the Summer of Lovesters. After a few weeks, Keith hied out of town and made his way to the Cascades. He is much happier there, with his SKS and a few thousand rounds of ammunition and like-armed friends.
