Despite the fact that North Korea
claimed to be an “AIDS-free zone” on the annual World AIDS Day on December 1
last year, the country is facing a large HIV outbreak, according to a new
report from US and North Korean researchers.
According
to a report by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, there
were as many as 8,362 HIV-positive people in North Korea last year. A
nationwide survey by North Korea’s National AIDS Commission last year also
revealed that HIV is commonly spread in the country through blood donations and
drug use.
