Obamacare works just like we were told

At the dermatologist’s office on Tuesday, a doctor’s assistant said she does not pay attention to politics.

“Not at all,” she said. “When my husband and my brother talk about politics, I leave the room. I want nothing to do with it.”

For someone who does not pay attention to what is going on, she is greatly affected by that which she ignores.

She then mentioned her 16-year-old autistic daughter’s health insurance.

“I was notified last month the premiums are going from $200 a month to $600 a month. I cannot afford that, so right now my daughter does not have insurance, and for that I will have to pay a fine.”

My wife suggested Medicare, since the girl was diagnosed as autistic.

“I tried that, but I was told I make too much money,” she said.

She also said the Medicare person said she should work less hours and get her pay low enough so her daughter would qualify.

Right. Tell your employer you no longer can work full time. And keep your usual lifestyle – same house, make car payments and put the same amount and quality of food on the table.

The government is doing a great job.

Harvard professors hit with reality

Monday night on Antiques Roadshow, an art evaluator talking about a painting, said, “Social realists were concerned about the common man.”

What? What? By her remarks, the evaluator meant persons of education, especially artists and writers, who, by simply mentioning “the common man” exhibit no realization of anyone outside their own venue of lofts and showings.

With concern for the common man: “Members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the heart of the 378-year-old university, voted overwhelmingly in November to oppose changes that would require them and thousands of other Harvard employees to pay more for health care. The university says the increases are in part a result of the Obama administration’s Affordable Care Act, which many Harvard professors championed.”

“Richard F. Thomas, a Harvard professor of classics and one of the world’s leading authorities on Virgil, called the changes ‘deplorable, deeply regressive, a sign of the corporatization of the university.’”

(“Corporatization of the university,” as opposed to “one size fits all” government and education, espoused by overeducated northeastern university types. Or, the best and the brightest.)

But the government told me I was signed up!

'It's not fair – you know, I signed up last week like I was supposed to.'

'Why is this so complicated?' she asked. 'I had my own private insurance last year, but they cancelled me in November. I'm not sure which end is up.'

“It's unlikely that a valid insurance card would have changed Galvez' fortunes, however.

“Her Carefirst plan, identified on the Obamacare website as BlueChoice Plus Bronze, carries a $5,500 per-person deductible for 2014 – an amount she would have to pay out-of-pocket before her coverage would apply to medical expenses.”

Why won’t insurance companies say ‘Hold on just a minute’?

1. Because they don’t know how? 2. Because they bought into the ACA? 3. Because they might lose control of billions of dollars?

OK.

What we have so far:

• Employers will be mandated to buy your policies for 2014
• (Oops, employers are angry)
• Employers won’t be mandated until 2015 – if then
• Small employers will give workers a choice of health plans through the SHOP program in 2014
• (Oops, we can’t get the web site ready in time)
• Small employers won’t have to offer a choice of plan until – sometime later
• You must cancel these individual policies
• (Oops, public backlash)
• You must reinstate these policies
• (Oops, many insurance commissioners won’t allow it)
• You must continue to cover providers and drugs even for cancelled policies
• The deadline for enrollment will be December 15, 2013
• (Oops, web site problems)
• The deadline for enrollment will be December 23, 2013
• (Oops, too much traffic)
• The deadline for enrollment will be December 24, 2013
• Never mind, there is no deadline
• First month’s premium must be received by December 31, 2013
• (Oops, back-end problems with the web site)
• First month’s premium must be received by January 8, 2014
• Make that January 10, 2014

Working for the government is fun, ‘cause if people don’t do what you say, you can fine them or put them in jail

This past week, the federal government “took the first steps to ban trans fats. Why? Because trans fats are bad for you and you can’t be trusted to avoid them on your own.”

You can’t be trusted, because you are not smart enough to know what is good or bad for you. Someone in the government must make the decision for you.

How good is the federal government? “The number of civilians (i.e., not counting the military) who work for the executive branch alone is today nearly equal to the entire population of the United States in 1776.” (Same link.)

But we’ve grown since then. We need more people working in the government.

OK. But, the US population in 1776 was 2.5 million. We’ve grown about 120 times that number, so we need more people working … for one branch of the government? For the executive branch, whose job is to administrate?

The idea that government knows best is perfectly proved in the Affordable Health Care Act’s decision concerning your choice of insurance policies. “If you like it, you can keep it” has proved a lie. “The fact that the people who held them liked them, thought they were good, and wanted to keep them doesn’t count for much, because the government knows best.” (Mr. Goldberg’s link.)
