Land of our fathers**

“A NEWPORT shopkeeper has been forced by police to remove a T-shirt from his shop window because they felt it ‘could be seen to be inciting racial hatred.’ Matthew Taylor, 35, the owner of Taylor’s clothes store on Emlyn Walk in the city, printed up and displayed the T-shirt with the slogan: ‘Obey our laws, respect our beliefs or get out of our country’ after Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, was killed in near Woolwich barracks in London last week. But following a complaint from a member of the public, police came to his store and threatened to arrest him unless he removed the Tshirt from sight…”

**Thank God our fathers left.

We’re sorry, Sweden

A message of apology from The Guardian:

“In recent years this newspaper, along with the entire British left, may have given the impression that we viewed Sweden as a peaceful, egalitarian paradise which should be emulated by politicians around the world. Articles such as 'These riots would have never happened in Sweden', 'Everyone trusts each other in Sweden' and 'Swedish socialism is the way to get out of recession' may have unwittingly given readers the impression that we thought that the Swedish model of high taxation and cradle-to-grave welfare provision had produced the most harmonious and socially cohesive nation in the world.

“We now realise, in the light of recent events, that there is no truth in any of the above. With Stockholm going up in flames and hoards (sic) of angry youths smashing everything in sight for seven days and nights, we would like to assure readers that Sweden is, in fact, a neo-liberal hellhole where pictures of Milton Friedman hang from every town hall and plutocrats rub the faces of the poor in the dirt. Contrary to what some may have inferred from our many articles on the subject, Sweden is actually a racist, intolerant and desperately unequal failed state run by right-wing ideologues which suffers from endemic police brutality. The recent riots were the inevitable consequence of the low-tax, low-spend free market fundamentalism with which we have always associated Sweden.

“We are happy to set the record straight and apologise for any confusion. We trust that more recent, hastily written articles such as 'Right wing Sweden gets it comeuppance' and 'We always said this would happen' will cover our arse and reassure readers that we have always seen this country as an accident waiting to happen. With regards to articles published prior to last week, we would like to issue a mass clarification: when we wrote 'Sweden', we meant 'Norway'. Or, if it kicks off in Norway, 'Finland'.”

MoTown will do with less – Much less

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder last month appointed “bankruptcy attorney and turnaround specialist” Kevin Orr to run Detroit for the next 18 months.

Detroit is the largest city ever placed under state control.

Detroit joins Benton Harbor, Flint, Pontiac, Ecorse and Allen Park as Michigan cities with state-appointed emergency managers. “Public school districts in Muskegon Heights, Highland Park and Detroit also have managers.”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/25/kevyn-orr-detroit-city-council_n_2950633.html

PBS recently ran a less-than-I-expected story on Detroit and the city’s problems. One segment at an automobile show highlighted why Detroit has a debt of $14 billion, but no one in the program recognized the cause, or if anyone did know, no one had the courage to mention it.

In the segment, a bar owner and his wife talked with a GM Volt representative and then a Chinese-owned BYD rep, both showing electric cars. The man was surprised at the Volt’s $40,000 sticker price and even more surprised when learning the BYD car cost half as much, but had the same options, according to the BYD spokeswoman.

The man returned to the Volt spokesman and asked when GM would have a car that would compete with the China-built car. He asked why the China-built car carried a price half the Volt’s sticker.

No one gave the answer, so here it is:

The car manufactured in China was not made by members of the United Auto Workers union.

Detroit has lost more than half its population of 30 years ago. By those who talked in the PBS program, only one thing can bring Detroit back to its wonder years – the same thing that made Detroit the car capital of the world and which brought MoTown to the dregs in which it now lives … the UAW.

The people are breathing old air.

I didn’t know there was a name for TWOUS

(TWOUS -- The War On Us)

Operation Vigilant Eagle

Veteran committed last August because of Facebook posts.

http://www.wtop.com/41/3332852/Facebook-posts-Suit-filed-over-vets-detention

“Operation Vigilant Eagle is an American law-enforcement effort headed by the FBI aimed at preventing political violence by ‘lone wolf’ terrorists. The operation was first mentioned in the Wall Street Journal in April 2009.

“In this case a ‘lone wolf’ is a person who operates alone, outside of extremest organizations. Examples included Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber, Scott Roeder who killed a Kansas abortion doctor and James von Brunn who attacked the American United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Such attackers are hard to detect as they do not associate with other extremists.”

Or:

This article was written by Pamella Geller and originally published at Freedom Outpost

“Obama’s war on our fundamental rights is devastating. The enemedia performs like state-run media and covers for this incredible rout. It is shocking. And in all of these grotesque anti-American maneuvers, Obama and his thugs are always using Orwellian language. ‘Operation Vigilant Eagle’ criminalizes free speech and targets our nation’s best — our vets.”

So nobody in the federal government said, “Hmm. You know, we might just be giving fuel to the engine for every right-wing conspiracist out there.” Nope. Nobody had any sense on this. But, then, it is the federal government.

The myth of superior Islamic Spain

“The opulent and refined Islamic civilization which up till now has been placed alongside and contemporary with a dark, ignorant and impoverished Christian Europe of the seventh to tenth centuries, is a myth. When Islamic cities do appear, in the middle of the tenth century, they are very comparable, in terms of size and level of culture, to the contemporary cities of Christian Europe.”

‘The Anti-Bullying Movement is Completely Fake’

http://www.peekinthewell.net/blog/the-anti-bullying-movement-is-completely-fake/#comments

Of course it is. It always was, because as with all things Liberal/Progressive, the “movement” (1) is for victims only; and, (2) definitions can and do change almost daily.

It’s like kids: Mom, she’s looking at me! Make her stop!

The look-ee is a victim; the look-er is a bully.

A slight digression to introduce a point: In high school, my daughter brought home girls who were having problems with parents or who – in a pregnant girl’s case -- didn’t have a place to stay. (My wife always got approval from parents before the girls could stay.) One girl, who was with us only a couple of nights, said in conversation with a visiting girl, “He’s, like, stalking me? Every time I see him, he’s looking at me.”

A new definition. Looking equals stalking. The same as sexual harassment occurs whenever a woman says it does.

Bullying is whatever anybody thinks it is. As long as the victim fits the Liberal/Progressive parameter.

‘The Justice Department has allowed us to say AG Holder supports press freedom’

Comment from The Washington Examiner:

“Justice Department has overreached in its leak investigations and said officials would seek procedural and possibly legislative changes to protect journalists’ First Amendment rights.

“Holder’s commitment came at a private meeting with news executives after criticism that the Justice Department had infringed on the news media in several high-profile leak investigations. Participants said he told them officials would revise guidelines for issuing subpoenas to obtain reporters’ phone records.

“The 90-minute meeting was attended by a small group of journalists after several news organizations objected to the Justice Department’s insistence that it be held off the record. The participants, however, reached an agreement with the Justice Department under which they could describe what occurred during the meeting in general terms. The Justice Department is expected to meet with other organizations and media lawyers in coming days.

"Holder and aides 'completely endorsed the president’s statement that reporters should not be at legal risk for doing their job,' said Martin Baron, The Washington Post’s executive editor, who was among the participants. 'They acknowledged the need for changes in their own guidelines and the need to have a more rigorous internal review.'

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

I don’t know where to begin. Answering absolute idiocy is difficult.

These people – representing news organizations – agree to attend a meeting hosted by the attorney general, a meeting in which the AG will talk about what his government intends to do concerning freedom of the press, and these people agree not to report anything unless the AG gives permission.

These people hear the AG say his government said will “seek procedural and possibly legislative changes to protect journalists’ First Amendment rights.”

Look at that: The AG’s government intends to have its followers in Congress make laws protecting First Amendment rights. As the nation’s top lawyer, why does Mr. Holder not understand the First Amendment protects the First Amendment?

The AG also said “officials would revise guidelines for issuing subpoenas to obtain reporters’ phone records.” How could any journalist sitting in that room hear those words and not stand and say, “Just a minute, Mr. Attorney General. Which laws give you the power and authority to get any reporter’s records?”

It is one thing to roll over for a political party, as many news organizations and reporters have done. It is altogether another form of surrender to be on one’s hands and knees and say, “Please, Sir. I want some more."
