Stubby

Stubby was an orange feral cat that ruled all other animals in our neighborhood in Sulphur Springs.

We first saw Stubby loping across the front yard. Even from a distance, you could tell his face was scarred from a number of fights, and carried a frowning attitude of “I’m the boss, you’re not.”

We saw him a couple more times, trotting across the front yard or the back yard, but we didn’t take serious notice until the day he beat up Not Figaro, our cat. Stubby didn’t cause much damage to Not Figaro, but he did get across the fact of who was the Neighborhood Bad Guy in Charge.

One day Priscilla and I came from somewhere, and we saw Stubby sacked out on the back of the couch, happy as a pig. He was asleep, but he didn’t stay that way. “Hey!” I said, and Stubby was gone. He shot off the couch like, well like a cat whose tail had been dipped in turpentine. He went down the hall toward a bathroom, and that is when Priscilla and I discovered there was a cat entry on a wall of the dirty clothes hamper closet. The closet door had a hinged hatch to put dirty clothes through and into the hamper. Or, an entry into the house for an enterprising feral cat, which survived by taking every advantage possible. As near as we could figure, there was an entry from the crawl space into the wall, and then into the closet.

A few weeks later, we were wakened after 2 a.m. by spitting, hissing and caterwauling, the sounds of Not Figaro defending himself against Stubby. We didn’t see Stubby, but there wasn’t any other cat with the cattitude to come into the house at night, eat the cat food in the kitchen and then attack Not Figaro for complaining.

There came a time we didn’t often see Stubby or discover him napping on the couch or attacking Not Figaro. We figured the cat rises and the cat falls.

Then one day I was looking out the kitchen window and decided Stubby was still around.

Across the back yard trotted an orange cat, and behind her, in file, were four orange kittens, each sporting a stubby tail.

Justice, justice, justice

A New Zealand man who traveled to the U.S. home of a 14-year-old girl he had communicated with online was shot by the girl’s mother, a sheriff said Monday.

Troy George Skinner, 25, was shot Friday after he allegedly smashed a glass door and tried to enter the home in Goochland, Virginia, said sheriff James Agnew.

The Goochland County sheriff said Skinner bought a knife and duct tape after arriving in the U.S. The sheriff also said the girl’s mother saw a man trying to enter her home, warned him several times she had a gun, then fired after he broke the glass on the second door he tried to open.
Skinner was struck in the neck and remains hospitalized, according to authorities.
“All I can say is the manner in which he attempted to enter that home in the face of a firearm pointed at him and the implements we recovered from him – the only inference is that he had very bad intent,” Agnew said.  Agnew said Skinner will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon with the intent to commit a serious crime.
New Zealand police said they were aware of the incident and would be helping U.S. authorities as needed. New Zealand authorities say they’ve also been in contact with Skinner’s family and have offered consular assistance.
It wasn’t immediately known if Skinner has an attorney. His hometown in New Zealand was not given by authorities.

A new way of announcing a death

Alexander Zakharchenko, leader of separatists in the Donetsk area of eastern Ukraine, died Friday from an explosion at a cafĂ©.

Zakharchenko "’received injuries incompatible with life as a result of an explosion in the center of Donetsk,’ the separatist administration said in a statement.”

Zakharchenko is the latest commander “killed in unexplained circumstances not connected to front-line combat.

“…Arseny Pavlov, who went by the nom de guerre ‘Motorola’ … was blown up in the lift of his apartment building in Donetsk in October 2016.

“Another prominent casualty was Alexander Bednov, nicknamed ‘Batman,’ a senior commander in the Luhansk People's Republic, another eastern Ukrainian breakaway region that neighbors Donetsk. He was killed in January 2015 when his convoy came under fire in a location where, at the time, there was no fighting with Ukrainian forces.”

Zis is California, und you vill haf vomen on your board (This had text yesterday.)

“State legislators passed a bill Wednesday that would require publicly-traded companies headquartered in California to place at least one woman on their board by the end of next year — or face a penalty.”
“The bill mandates that corporate boards include at least one woman by the end of 2019 and as many as three by the end of 2021, depending on size.”

Of course there is a penalty for failing to obey this most needful law.

“Companies that fail to comply could face a fine up to $300,000 from the California Secretary of State.”

Comments wondered why only men and women must be appointed. What about the two dozen “other genders?”

IMF OKs land seizure as long as crops aren’t harmed

Sure. Throw owners off land, but make sure carrots are harvested.

“The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approves of South Africa’s controversial land reform as long as the highly contentious process is ‘rules-based’ and transparent, according to the fund’s representative in the country.
Montfort Mlachila, the IMF’s senior resident representative in South Africa, said that the regulation must not damage agricultural output and put at risk food supplies for the country’s citizens.
“’We are in full support of the need to undertake land reforms in order to address the issues of inequality,’ Mlachila said in an interview with Reuters.”

So, the IMF says, it’s okay to steal stuff as long as the robbery addresses
“the issues of inequality.” As in, “You got it, I don’t. Therefore, I can take it from you.”
