Fireworks

There were more rockets glaring red and bombs bursting bright in the neighborhood than at any other Independence Day tonight, with at least three groups of large pyrotechnics fired from the neighborhood.

This was the sixth manifestations of liberty my wife and I have seen since we moved here in November 2014. The largest show is put on by a county deputy sheriff, and is set up about 300 yards from our patio.  The deputy does a professional job.

Independence Day

Two hundred forty-five years ago today, Pvt. Martin Johnston, 3rd Virginia Regiment, and Pvt. Thomas Merriman, 3rd Virginia Regiment, learned that they and several thousand other Americans were fighting for a new country -- the United States of America.

Pvt. Johnston was an ancestor of my wife's, and Pvt. Merriman was one of mine. We also had direct ancestors in the 1861-65 war, another Martin Johnston of the 10th Texas Infantry and James Ward of the 11th Texas Cavalry and of the state Frontier Regiment.

Age of rulers going up, IQ going down

From The Z Man

The gross incompetency of the military is not unique. The entire managerial class is suffering from a rapid decline in intelligence. The truth is the system evolved for an adult population of the last century. It reflected the demographics of the population as a whole, but also the demographics of the ruling class. Over the last couple of generations, the people taking up positions in the system are significantly dumber, reflecting the changing demographics of the country.

This IQ decline will only become more acute in the next decade. The great Baby Boomer retirement will hit the civil service harder than the dreaded private sector, because the civil service is much older. The average age of the private workforce is roughly 35, depending upon who is doing the measuring. Similarly, the average age of the government workforce is 50. The leadership class is even older. In other words, the people running the system are geezers, not long for the world.

Eagle

Last year a nesting pair hatched and raised a little one. A week ago a lone eagle landed on a limb of the eagle tree across the pond. It stayed only a few minutes and then lifted off. A few days ago my wife was on the patio when a huge bird flew low overhead. "It was an eagle," she said. "Eagles are big." A few minutes ago, an eagle appeared over the trees across the pond. It soared and banked, flew straight, picked up quite a bit of speed when turning with the wind. And then it flew away. It'll be back.

Homeland Security would never manufacture false intelligence

There have been so many right-wing attacks on various targets since Jan. 6, that I haven’t been able to keep up with the body count.

From Daily Mail UK

"The Department of Homeland Security said it will be on 'heightened alert' this July 4th weekend for white supremacists looking to exploit states' rollback of COVID-19 restrictions and attack a range of possible targets, officials told DailyMail.com.

The warning comes as officials say they've been monitoring a spike in online chatter that could indicate white supremacist-motivated attacks.

"'As of 16 June, racially or ethnically motivated violent extremist-white supremacists (RMVE-WSs) were sharing downloadable links to a publication discussing targeting mass gatherings, critical infrastructure and law enforcement officers,'” DHS said.

When the “likely” attacks don’t happen, will the press ask DHS why? Uh, no.
