Democrats want homosexuals to have military family benefits

Nobody saw this coming, huh.

”U.S. Rep. Adam Smith wants the Pentagon to change the definition of spouse to include same-sex couples so that husbands and wives of legally married gays and lesbians in the armed forces could collect military benefits.”

“Smith, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, on Wednesday introduced a bill to essentially exempt the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs from the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as between a woman and a man.”

(Why not exempt DOD from Defense of Marriage? Obama has already said his Justice Department will not defend the law.

(Of course, a law has to have a catchy name, generally having to do with “equality.” So, Rep. Smith’s proposal is called “Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act.”

(Here’s a thing people outside the military do not understand: The military is different. The military is not the same as your civilian neighborhood. If you haven’t been in a uniformed service, you can’t understand.)

“Smith’s bill would change the definition of spouse in the U.S. code to include same-sex marriages.”
