Pitkin, Louisiana, Zip 70656

As of 2010 census, population was 576 in 230 households; median age 41.6; racial lineup: 541 white, 10 multiracial; 3 Asian, 2 other race, 1 African-American, 10 “Latino ethnicity.” (Wikipedia soiurce.)

What does Asian mean in census data? Are people from Siberia listed as Russian or as Asian? Philippinos and Japanese are counted in the same checked box. Indians and Chinese are in the same box.

Most of the eastern border of Vernon Parish is the Sabine River. That is Texas on the other side, and the river is pronounced “Suh-bean.” On an episode of Rawhide back in the early 1960s, scout Rowdy Yates reported to trail boss Gil Favor that he had crossed the “Say-bine.” That’s all well and good for a Hollywood type, but writers should have done their homework and found out Roman pronunciation and Texan talk sometimes are different.

Fort Polk takes up 200,000 acres of Vernon Parish.
