Antarctic cooling kills 150,000 penguins

Iceberg “the size of Rome” and “larger than Luxemburg” forces Adelie penguins to travel farther for food.

“The penguins used to live near a large body of open water, but the arrival of the iceberg in East Antarctica and fast ice expansion has dramatically increased the distance they must travel to feed.”

(The story quotes no one except “researchers” in an Antarctica Science article. The article is unclear as to whether 150,000 penguins are already dead from starvation or if that number will die.)

Oceanographer takes unusual step to find out thickness of Antarctic ice

He measured it.

“Ted Maksym, an oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, conducted a study in which he sent an underwater robot into the depths of the Antarctic sea to measure the ice.

“His results contradicted previous assumptions made by scientists and showed that the ice is actually much thicker than has been predicted over the last 20 years.”
